Upon meeting her, Samantha Spencer’s ability to engage people in thoughtful, creative discussions is undeniable. She has spent many years developing her craft as a teaching artist, earned a Masters in Art Education and has produced professional film work, which received various award nominations. In addition to her impressive résumé, the way she accessibly and warmly leads a room with her expertise is what makes her approach so unique and effective.
She brings a personal, artistic aesthetic and drive for exploration that push her students and colleagues to create in ways that they otherwise might not have. A few years ago, Samantha and I had the opportunity to work together on a grant-funded, classroom-based arts program. Her schools saw increased student engagement and excitement from teachers, improved critical thinking, and final projects that demonstrated artistic skill well beyond the students’ grade level.
Samantha’s current success with the digital media lab and high-performing poetry team at Sullivan High School is a testament to her ability to create safe spaces that allow for fun, exploratory learning. She leads by example with a strong work ethic and dedication to craft that has sparked lasting growth in her students, both personally and academically. I’m very much looking forward to seeing Big Mia and all of Samantha’s future projects.
